GOR Roadtrip – Day Two
Doofus was up bright and early, keeping an eye on those evil birds.
But in the end he was happy to just watch the river and it’s obligate tranquility.
The car was filthy that morning…
Accidentally found some Tommi Makkinen roads….
The 12 Apostles and other shit were way more cooler than you can see in pics, go see them for yourself.
After the twelve’ish apostles we were cruising the GOR, frequently behind people who wouldn’t yield and surrounded by scrubland, wondering what’s the point.
Then we hit the foresty stuff and after a few k’s two cars got out of our way, then we had about 50km of amazing roads to ourselves – the next car we came across turned up right at the first place that allowed for overtaking in half an hour, splendid luck!
From the discussions I’ve had with others, I consider our luck quite exceptional.
Eventually stopped in Lorne for refreshments.
Took the Geelong Alt route out, again fantastic roads and very few cars. Had a couple of those “wow we’re really fucking alive” moments here.
Went north via some really backwater roads, at one stage I thought we might have damaged the rims on this giant frickin pothole, the state of some of the roads there are shocking.
Scenery is cool though.
Then we hit Banjo Country and dropped in on Mondi to pick up the hard-top n stuff, thought we’d try out a big-ass-wing…
In the end Mondi provided a great suggestion for a place to crash for the evening, it was only 100m from a fantastic restaurant, and had a great spa built in.
Though the light fixture seemed concerned about what was going on in the bedroom…
Also if you get a chance, get to Whirrakee in Bendigo, great food and service, decent prices on the food, huge wine list – but hell they know how to charge for vino – probably 200+ wines to choose from, a few <$70, most $100-150.
