30 Day Steak Challenge – Week One Round-Up

For all the posts so far, see here. For the introduction, see here.

Consumption stats:

  • Steak: 2.35kg/5.2lbs
  • Processed meat: 420g/1lbs
  • Seafood: 600g/1.3lbs
  • Carby stuff: 350g/0.75lbs (note: not carbs, just carby stuff, eg rice)
  • Wine: 11.75 bottles
  • Spirits: 1 bottle
  • Beer: 6L/200floz

All seven steak meals were dining out, there were three instances of non-steak meals (all seafood, one with rice), and three instances of snacks (eg, fast food burger – patty only).

So this is what the average constitution of a meal for me was:

  • 235g/8.5oz steak
  • 42g/1.5oz processed meat
  • 60g/2oz seafood
  • 35g/1.25oz carby stuff
  • 1.175 bottles wine
  • 2 shots of liquor
  • 1 pint of beer

Averaged macronutrient figures per meal (incl. guesstimations for fatty sauces):

  • 100g/3.5oz of fat = 900cals
  • 85g/3oz of protein = 340cals
  • 48g/1.7oz of carbs = 192cals
  • Average meal = 1432cals of food only, with alcohol = 2657cals

Energy breakdown % (F/P/C):

  • 62/23/13

Average alcohol per meal:

  • 175g/6.2floz of alcohol = 1225cals

Inclusive energy breakdown % (F/P/C/A):

  • 33/13/7/46

Average daily energy intake:

  • 3,795cals

Daily BMR:

  • 1,886cals

Daily calorie needs (Harris-Benedict equation):

  • 2,600cals

Weight change:

  • minus 1kg/1.1lbs

Confounders:

a) I don’t usually drink anywhere near that amount of beer, but the day this all started I was coming off a 10 hour red wine binge and couldn’t handle any more, so spent the night on beer and champagne.
b) “Cheat” meals for me like the rice dish are extremely rare, but I’m dating a new girl and she cooked it for me, I can’t just flip tables and say no way man. Besides, it WAS delicious.

So these two factors massively skewed the carb counts, which otherwise would be negligible from food, only existent in the wine I consume.

Notes:

This was 100% ad-libitum, so I ate as much as I pleased and when I felt like it. Also there were two meals which I wouldn’t have eaten except for social situations, ie I wasn’t hungry but we were doing dinner – and it was delicious.

So, hope you stats nerds enjoyed that. Of course it’s all pretty rough numbers, but I did record everything I ate, and most of what I drank (hic). If anything I’ve probably under-reported the alcohol and also calories in the foods.

If anything, it gives an insight into what I’ve stated many times before, once you’re down to a certain weight (my guess is 10-20lbs overweight where I am) you simply won’t lose any more weight with heavy drinking. However the upside is, you also don’t put it back on, so if you’re happy with your body – drink up! If not, drink up, you might feel better! (jokes jokes)

TL;DR – I need to drink less
